Living the Faith at Home
Living the faith at home – living as a “domestic church” (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, nos. 1655-1658) – includes fostering healthy family life, a culture of prayer, deepening the whole family’s relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church, connection with the local Church community, and sharing the joy that flows from this way of life with all those the family encounters.
As you think about what living the faith at home means to you, consider these words from Pope Francis:
“The family is called to join in daily prayer, to read the word of God and to share in Eucharistic communion, and thus to grow in love and become ever more fully a temple in which the Spirit dwells” (Pope Francis, On Love in the Family, no. 29).
“Imagine three expressions written above the doorway… ‘may I?’, ‘thank you’, and ‘pardon me’. Indeed, these expressions open up the way to living well in your family, to living in peace” (Pope Francis, General Audience).
When family members are focused on worshipping God and celebrating the sacraments, being courteous, giving thanks, and asking for forgiveness, they are working to better prepare their hearts to love and be loved by those around them. All these things together provide a rock-solid foundation for Catholic family life.
